Celebrate the spring season with live music and art-making at our first Twilight in the Gardens event of the year!

Bring a blanket, snacks, and drinks to picnic in our space and enjoy a live musical performance by the band I Think Like Midnight in our courtyard. This instrumental rock band will both soothe and excite you with their groovy, psychedelic sounds! 

Join artist and educator Dyymond Whipper-Young at our craft tables for a fun and unique art workshop. Create a music-inspired art project using upcycled CDs and records as their canvas. Drawing inspiration from your favorite song, decorate your CDs and records with colorful designs, creating a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Dyymond will guide you through the creative process, helping you to explore new ways of expressing yourself through art!

You also have the chance to learn more about Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens through fun, casual self-guided tours of our mosaicked basement, and can check out “Laying the Foundation: The Zagars’ Lives in South Philadelphia” in our galleries.

About the Performer:

I Think Like Midnight is an instrumental rock band formed by longtime devotees of the lost art of the succinct rock instrumental. Begun as a recording project, guitarist/songwriter Andrew Chalfen (The Trolleyvox, The Wishniaks, Gimme) and drummer Dean Clean Sabatino (The Dead Milkmen, Baby Flamehead) were so pleased with the results that they decided to release the material and put together a full band, recruiting bassist Josh Newman (American Altitude, The Silver Ages, Heyward Howkins Band) and in 2021, new keyboardist Aleksandr Yāker (Room Tone, Static Shapes). 

About the Teaching Artist:

Dyymond Whipper-Young is an artist and educator passionate about exposing youth to creative expression, cultural heritage, and careers in the creative economy. Since the age of 11, she could be found covered in clay and paint. Her work has premiered at over 50 major events across the country. Some of her most notable partnerships include working with The NAACP, Jordan Nike Brand, ESPN, the Los Angeles Urban League, and recently partnering with Crayola and the Franklin Institute to break the record for the world’s largest drawing by a single artist, at 6,450 square feet.

She was raised in Baltimore and moved to Philadelphia to attend Temple University, being crowned homecoming queen. As a fellow in The Mural Arts Philadelphia fellowship for Black Artists, she collaborates with community members and local artists to create work in public spaces. Dyymond has taught nationally at inner-city schools in Baltimore and Philadelphia and has led the sculpture department at Oxbow Summer Art Institute in Napa Valley. Her work lives at the intersection of Art, Culture, and Education.
